  2. Dear John,
These types of photos always affect people no matter what age. Just giving money to poor countries isn't working. We need to think of a better solution to help them.

  3. Yes Maelo, a different approach. I support 'Practical Action' - (formally known as 'Intermediate Technology' - a charity based upon principles of the economist E.F Schumacher, espoused in his essays 'Small Is Beautiful - Economics As If People Mattered'. You prob' know about his ideals anyway, and helping people and communities rather than 3rd world governments. Appropriate technology might be a cart that can be fixed to a bicycle (bicycles don't of course need feeding like Ox) or an internet enabled mobile phone - so people can "google" how to get better yield from crops etc. Small loans and practical assistance. In some ways what (we) might call the 'liberal' society.

  4. Dear John,
What a coincidence. I support Practical Action as well and have included a link to them on my other blog!
If you give a starving man a fish he will be fed one meal. If you give the same man a fishing rod he will be able to feed himself till the rod is broken and can't be used anymore. If you give a man a fishing boat he will be able to feed himself and sell the extra fish to make a living.
I knew a little about Schumacher's philosopy but my mother has ordered the book from Amazon since you posted your comment above.
    Thank you
